The Day the Supreme Court Rejected America’s Godly Heritage

by Edward Wood

On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia moved “that these united colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states.” The resolution was adopted on July 2, and the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4.

Most of the signers had seminary degrees and this influence is strongly reflected in the first two paragraphs of the document in which the reality of God as Creator is clearly acknowledged. Defying the odds and beginning with a rag-tag militia, the colonies, with the help of France, goes on to win its freedom over what was then perhaps the greatest military power on Earth.

It was this enduring belief in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Father of Jesus of Nazareth that I believe made America the greatest nation in the history of civilization. this is not to say we were perfect. The injustices perpetrated on North America’s original inhabitants, the perpetuation of the enslavement of other human beings, the denial of the right to vote for women still taints our history. But we learned from these mistakes and made moves to correct them – albeit some are still a work in progress.

Our willingness to step up and sacrifice ourselves to stop aggression and totalitarianism abroad have been legendary. The advances in living standards and technology this country has made has been no less than spectacular.

Then something went terribly wrong.

On June 17, 1963 by an 8-1 vote, the Supreme court effectively kicked God out of our schools. Worse than this outrage was the placidity of most of the Christians in this country to allow this to stand for almost 50 years with no significant challenge.

Within five months President Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas. The succeeding years of this decade were marked by the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the deepening and divisive involvement in Viet Nam, the expansion of the drug culture, “free love,” and the general loss of the innocence and optimism of our society.

I think it’s safe to say that we never really recovered from the 1960’s.

On January 22, 1973, by a vote of 7-2 Roe v. Wade prevented states from restricting abortions within the first three months of life, or banning it for the second trimester.

So, let’s see where we’ve ended up since then.

Instead of the Lord’s Prayer, our schools now hand out condoms, have full time police patrolling the halls, and are increasingly bringing in a homosexual-friendly agenda into even the earliest grades.

Instead of families consisting of a mother, father, and children, over half of them are now single-parent and a growing number of families are composed of homosexual or lesbian partners.

Even in “traditional” families, Mom and Dad are schlepping off the upbringing of their infant children to strangers (day care). Later on some of these absentee parents express complete surprise that their kid is using drugs . . . or planning, and sometimes succeeding, to carry out terrorist acts.

Four thousand of the unborn who had no voice or choice in their conception are terminated in what is euphemisticallty called a “procedure” every day.

As I write, America has willingly abandoned our leadership technologically, economically, and, as we have seen, morally as well.

We look in confusion at the converging of economic, political, religious, and even natural events enveloped in a turmoil that seems to be swallowing up not only the world, but now coming home in earnest to the United States and wonder why.

Though the passage below was specifically directed toward the Israelites as they headed for the Promised Land and the specifics regarding the Jordan and “graven images” (idolatry) differ, perhaps it still gives insight into why America has ended up where it is today and what its future will be if its present course continues to be followed:

25 “When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of the LORD your God to provoke Him to anger, 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess; you will not prolong your days in it, but will be utterly destroyed. (Deuteronomy 4:25-26)

In the end we know God will make things right for those who believe and trust in Jesus. But when we stand before him as we all one day will, what account will we give of our stewardship and witness of his Word when it really counted?

True Christianity is a Fight

Quote from J. C. Ryle’s sermons on Holiness
A section from “True Christianity Is a Fight”

“True Christianity! Let us mind that word ‘true.’ There is a vast quantity of religion current in the world, which is not true, genuine Christianity. It passes muster, it satisfies sleepy consciences; but it is not good money. It is not the authentic reality that called itself Christianity in the beginning. There are thousands of men and women who go to churches and chapels every Sunday and call themselves Christians. They make a ‘profession’ of faith in Christ. Their names are in the baptismal register. They are reckoned Christians while they live. They are married with a Christian marriage service. They mean to be buried as Christians when they die. But you never see any ‘fight’ about their religion! Of spiritual strife and exertion and conflict and self–denial and watching and warring they know literally nothing at all. Such Christianity may satisfy man, and those who say anything against it may be thought very hard and uncharitable; but it certainly is not the Christianity of the Bible. It is not the religion, which the Lord Jesus founded and His apostles preached. It is not the religion, which produces real holiness. True Christianity is ‘a fight.’

“The true Christian is called to be a soldier and must behave as such from the day of his conversion to the day of his death. He is not meant to live a life of religious ease, indolence and security. He must never imagine for a moment that he can sleep and doze along the way to heaven, like one traveling in an easy carriage. If he takes his standard of Christianity from the children of this world, he may be content with such notions, but he will find no countenance for them in the Word of God. If the Bible is the rule of his faith and practice, he will find his course laid down very plainly in this matter. He must ‘fight.’

“With whom is the Christian soldier meant to fight? Not with other Christians…No, indeed! The principal fight of the Christian is with the [world’s system], the flesh and the devil. These are his never–dying foes. These are the three chief enemies against whom he must wage war. Unless he gets the victory over these three, all other victories are useless and vain. If he had a nature like an angel, and were not a fallen creature, the warfare would not be so essential. But with a corrupt heart, a busy devil and an ensnaring world, he must either ‘fight’ or be lost.”

God Tests Judges Today on Both Coasts

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.  (Matthew 5:6)

Today, Friday, November 30, 2012 there are significant court battles on both coasts of the United States.  God is testing the hearts of the judges and people to see if they will stand for righteousness.

On the east coast, there is a battle in the US Supreme Court for the definition of marriage.  God has defined marriage as the unity between one man and one woman for life.

When God performed the first marriage, He declared:

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:24-25)

In opposition to God’s truth, Satan is trying to compel the citizens of the United States to give the same honor to various forms of sexual chaos that God hates.  Satan wants to call two men joining together as one flesh an honorable union that the community, state and country should bless.

If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

God designed government to be the institution that punishes evil and rewards those who do good.  God looks upon government to see if those He placed in authority will uphold His righteousness or rebel and promote evil.  Satan is trying to encourage government to honor sexual defilement, and then punish those who refuse to honor the behavior God abhors.

On the west coast, the Federal Court in Sacramento is hearing from Christians who are trying to protect children from homosexual recruiters.  Homosexual recruiters recently passed a law in California (SB1172) that prevents children that were molested by a homosexual from getting help.  According to the law, they could only be helped by a counselor that promotes homosexuality.  If the child is confused by the sexual stimulation from someone of the same sex, they are not allowed to be counseled to reject it and only pursue sexual stimulation from someone of the opposite sex after marriage.

God designed sexual stimulation inside of marriage to be a wonderful thing.  King Solomon taught young men to enjoy their own wife, to keep their orgasms as a private treasure between husband and wife and only touch their wife’s breasts.

15 Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.
16 Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
Streams of water in the streets?
17 Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.
18 Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with the wife of your youth.
19 As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be enraptured with her love.  (Proverbs 5:15-19)

In contrast to God’s design, Satan wants to silence the truth and prevent children who have been violated from hearing God’s truth.  As a child is hurt and confused about how they were treated and how their body works, Satan wants to make sure children are only guided to pursue more defilement of what God designed for good.

How should we respond?

First, we should pursue God’s righteousness.  Jesus commanded us to care more about His right way of living than the food we eat or the clothes we wear.

“Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?’ or “What shall we drink?’ or “What shall we wear?’  33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.  (Matthew 6:31 & 33)

Second, we should pray for those in authority that they would pass the test God has for them.  God is allowing the judges to be tested by Satan.  Will the judges agree with God or will they assist in Satan’s rebellion against God?  Will they stand for truth or deny that they even know of God’s truth?

31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”    (Luke 22:31-34)

Third, we should encourage those who have failed the test to change their ways, repent and seek God’s forgiveness.  God desires to forgive those who have failed, when they agree with God’s righteousness and turn from their evil ways.

14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  (II Chronicles 7:14)

Last, we should warn those who are helping Satan of the consequences.  Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  God will judge guilty all those who refuse to repent and accept His forgiveness.

6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (The Revelation of Jesus Christ 21:6-8)

Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled by the fountain of life, those who refuse to repent and ask for forgiveness will be burned in perpetual death.

God Wins Every Day

Jesus Christ said, ” And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!”   (Luke 12:4-5)

God wins every day in a most terrifying way.   The leaders and laws of the land may be promoting more evil.  It may seem like evil is winning.  Our nation is killing more babies. Sexual chaos and divorce are running rampant.  But those who love evil lose every day, and those who love God win every single day.

All around the world people die every day, and every day God sorts them out.   About 150,000 to 200,000 people die on an average day.  All around the world people die, and for them, today is the day they stand before God to be judged.

REWARD FOR THOSE WHO LOVE JESUS

For those that love God and love His Son Jesus Christ, it is a wonderful day of judgment.  Everything they have done to offend God was judged on the cross 2,000 years ago.  Jesus Christ stepped between them and their punishment and took their place.  All the wrath of God’s justice and righteousness was carried out against Jesus on the cross.  Jesus took their death sentence and died in their place.  All their sin was taken care of.  So, they stand before God forgiven.  So, when they die their life is reviewed for reward. The records are opened and everything they have done is reviewed to make sure they get rewarded for everything they did that pleased God.

Jesus said, “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”  (Mark 9:41, see also Matthew 6:1-4)

Because they lived a life loving God and thanking Jesus for what He did, they are given mercy and grace.  They are rewarded for standing for truth under temptation.  They are rewarded for trusting God in hard times.  Because they cared about identifying with God’s kingdom and God’s authority to set the standards of right and wrong (Matthew 6:33), they are rewarded with crowns, eternal life, a mansion and being forever with God.

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.  (Psalm 16:11)

WRATH FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT LOVE JESUS

Unfortunately, for those who do not know Jesus Christ as their LORD, ruler and savior from sin, their judgment is a judgment of wrath.  They rejected God’s offer to turn from their sinful ways, repent and be forgiven.  The blood of Jesus Christ does not protect them from God’s wrath.  Instead, the fact that they rejected bowing to Jesus as ruler, king and savior makes God very angry.  God loves His only Son Jesus Christ, and those who don’t love Jesus are not welcome in heaven.

When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe.  (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10)

God offered forgiveness through Jesus Christ and they rejected it.  They wanted freedom from God.  They did not want the Holy Spirit reminding them that what they were doing was evil.  They did not honor the One True God who made heaven, earth and every living creature.  Now their request is granted and they are thrown into the lake of fire, far away from God’s mercy.

Jesus warned about the seriousness of hell … “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— 48 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.” (Mark 9:47-48)

Hell is a horrible place.  Jesus described it as a place where people are constantly burned.  The stomach worms don’t die and there is intense torment.  People are blinded and grope around in darkness.  There is gnashing of teeth.

Gnashing of teeth is what people do when they accidentally drive their brand new car into a brick wall and ruin the nice paint job.  They gnash their teeth and say, “OH!  Why did I do that?  I can’t believe I did that.  How could I have done that?”  That is gnashing of teeth.

As people grope around in burning darkness, they gnash their teeth, because they know they have rejected the one thing that could have saved them.  They rejected Jesus Christ and His kingdom of righteousness.  They joined Satan in his rebellion against God.  They died as a citizen of the wrong kingdom.  God offered them forgiveness and they didn’t repent before their death.  Once they died, it was too late to repent.

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.  (Hebrews 9:27)

Jesus said, ” Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9 But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.” (Luke 12:8-9)

Even though God’s Kingdom of Righteousness wins every day, we do not gloat over those who lose, because of the terrible, unending destruction that they receive.  Knowing how horrible hell is, we don’t even want our enemies to go there.  We want to warn them, so they don’t stay an enemy of God.  We want to be God’s tool to tell them about Jesus who can save them from the fire of hell.  We want them to change sides and join God’s Kingdom of Righteousness, Mercy and Grace.  We pray that their eyes would be opened to see how great and awesome God is.  We share God’s love, hope and mercy.

Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.  22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even their clothes that are stained by their sin.  (Jude 1:21-23)

God’s kingdom wins every day … in a most terrifying way.
