Discerning Who to Vote into Leadership

“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Jesus Christ in John 7:24 (NKJV)

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn. Proverbs 29:2

Dear Praying Friends,

Happy New Year, 2012! We find ourselves in a pivotal election year. Every two years we American citizens have the opportunity freely to choose our leaders. Every seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and 1/3 of the seats in the U.S. Senate are up for election. The Presidency is up for election this year, as it is every four years. Then there are thousands of state and local offices that must be filled.

Exercising our right to vote, we can elect leaders who could radically change the direction of our nation.

Choosing Civil Leaders – With the Iowa caucuses behind us, the Republican Presidential primaries beginning and a general election ahead of us I am deeply burdened that those who pray must be informed, and must in turn pray, inform and motivate others to pray aright. This will be the most important election of our lifetimes.

No set of guidelines for choosing civil leaders improves upon the simple list given by God to Moses through his father-in-law, Jethro, for the choosing the civil leaders of ancient Israel (see Ex 18:21). God gave specific directions for consecrating the Priests – the religious leaders elsewhere (e.g., Ex 28-29).

Moses was instructed to look for:

1) Ability – The KJV says “able men,” which means men who have the skills and experience and gravitas to lead and to get the job done. We cannot shoot in the dark and choose a great orator who does not have a track record of faithfulness and accomplishment.

2) The Fear of God – Nothing will substitute for the fear of God. Our entire civil government is built upon the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and the premise that our civil rights come from God and that to Him we must give an account. No one who does not recognize that we are “one nation under God” will be able to lead us and to protect our fundamental rights. The Constitution forbade religious tests for federal offices as a way of preventing the dominance of any one denomination–not as a way of excluding God from public life or denying our biblical heritage. Now, however, an army of secularists and atheizers want to steal that biblical heritage away from us. Voters have every right to act on the conviction that only men or women who fear God are fit to serve in positions of authority over others.

3) Men of Truth – This means men who love The Truth – the eternal principles of God’s law and the Ten Commandments–and men who practice truth telling. Lying politicians have become a by-word in our society today, yet we elect and reelect men who lie or twist, cover up, and distort the truth. We who believe must pray for, support and help elect men and women whom we know to a track record of honesty.

4) Men who Hate Covetousness – Candidates who have an assiduously clean record of business dealings and a public record of treating the taxpayer dollar as sacred – to be spent for constitutional purposes and not for all kinds of social programs that do not fall within the purview of the purpose of government – to provide law and order, a framework for criminal and civil justice and national security. America is bankrupt because elected officials have gone far afield from the fundamental God-given mission of civil government found in Romans 13:1 ff. Though its original author cannot be established, it is a truism that:

A democracy …can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

If our nation is to survive and thrive, it will be because we elect men and women who meet the simple requirements God gave Moses for selecting civil leaders 3500 years ago.

Americans now have an opportunity to choose our leaders again. Many believe that without a reversal of economic and moral policies established during the last few years, the United States will cease to be a free nation. We who study God’s Word know that He raises up and puts down leaders and nations, and that the prayer and obedience of God’s people are determinative of the degree to which He will bless our nation with godly leaders or otherwise. It is our duty to pray and vote for god-fearing leaders and to pray for the political defeat of those who advance unrighteousness.

  • May we consecrate ourselves and our families to pray and take action as never before, asking God to turn the tide in our nation this year! May we fast often, and use our influence to recruit everyone we know to do likewise. May we join organized prayer calls, attend prayer events and use our citizenship privileges to speak out, write letters to the editor and support god-fearing candidates (Ex 32:29-34; Neh 4:20; Eze 33:2-9; Joel 1:13; 2:12-18; Jonah 3:5-10; Mt 3:7-12; Acts 3:17-26).
  • Lord, have mercy upon us and our children. Grant wholehearted repentance to your people and mobilize us to be the spiritual army you intend us to be. Deliver us and our governments from evil. Raise God-fearing men and women to positions of public leadership and service. May pastors and churches mightily engage this year to influence the outcome of November’s elections for righteousness! May You give America cause to rejoice this year (Jdg 5:1-15a ff; Ps 75:4-10; 86:5-15; 110:3; Lam 3:22; Eze 38:5-10; Mk 10:47).
  • May God grant us discernment to elect a President and other officials whom He can bless! May we cry out to God while we can, and may He send a gracious turning in our nation – a turning back to Him! In Jesus name. Amen (Ex 18:21; Dt 17:14-20; Josh 24:15; 2 Chr 7:14; Pr 1:22-33; Joel 2:12-18; Lk 12:51-5; 6; Jn 9:4).

She Brought Me Joy

God is delighted by our sincere efforts to please Him.  Just do your best with what you know and the resources He provides.

When my daughter was five years old, she wanted to make me a glass of orange juice.  I sliced the oranges, and she rubbed them on the juicer and did the rest.  After several minutes of determined effort, she was ready to present her gift.  I looked at her bright smile as she held up the glass for me to taste.  My heart burst with love as her bright eyes anticipated my first sip.  It was wonderful!  I told her how much I appreciated the delicious orange juice and gave her a big hug.

As she scampered off to play, I reflected on how God is pleased with our sincere efforts to please Him.  I looked at the counter and thought of how I could have done it with less mess.  I could have been even more efficient and selected the perfect blend of juice, sweetness and pulp from Tropicana at the store.  But, that would not have been as delightful as her desire to please me.  Her gift to me brought joy to her heart, and it brought joy to my heart.

In the same way, God has given me assignments to do as opportunities to please Him.  Can God do a better job on His own, like He did in the six days of creation? Yes!  Can He communicate His justice more effectively, like He did with the flood in the days of Noah?  Of course!  Can He communicate His power and glory more stunningly, like He does in the Revelation of Jesus Christ? Absolutely!  Can God do it with someone else that is more skilled and makes less of a mess?  Yes, but that is not what He wants.  God wants to give me the opportunity to show my love for Him.  My life is my turn to please God and encourage others to please Him.

Many people are intimidated by their lack of education and skills.  They fear making a mess or not being as good as someone else.  So, they pray and hide, hoping someone else will make disciples in their neighborhood and workplace.  We can all be intimidated by the efficiency of the angel in Revelation who shares the gospel with the whole world in their own language.

Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth–to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people– 7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” (Revelation 14:6-7)

But this is not the angel’s turn right now.  Millions of people will be born and die before that angel’s turn.  This is our turn to please God. This is our turn for the man dying of disease a month from now.  It is our turn for the baby born two seconds ago.    Every precious person needs to know the good news that God loves them and wants them to walk through life with God as their heavenly Father.

Don’t be intimidated or wait for the perfect opportunity to start.  Are we going to make a mess of things?  Yes.  Are we going to make mistakes?  Guaranteed.  God is big enough to help us when we are scared and clean up the mess.  God longs for us to try with the simple sincerity and determined effort that my daughter used to make orange juice.  And … she brought me joy.

Do You Love Christ’s Appearing?

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Some Christians have gone sour in December, because they look around at all the distractions of sales at stores and celebrations to Santa, instead of Christ. It may seem that communities are celebrating everything but Christ at Christmas. Don’t be discouraged, they don’t know the right thing to do, unless the truth of Christmas is explained to them in word and example.

The goal of this article is to remind us of how wonderful it is that God chose to live among us and to remind us that God rewards those who celebrate His appearing.

Christmas is the time of year where we celebrate Christ’s appearing. God, the creator of the universe, chose to come down to earth in the form of a baby and dwell among us.

An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:20-23 & Isaiah 7:14)

Jesus’ Life Among Us
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John give us a written record of some of the amazing things surrounding Jesus the Messiah’s birth and life.
• Jesus’ birth was announced by angels. (Matthew 1 and Luke 2)
• Wise men came from other nations to bring gifts and worship. (Matthew 2)
• A jealous king killed many babies trying to murder Jesus. (Matthew 2)
• Jesus cast out demons and healed the sick. (Mark 1)
• Jesus fed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish. After stuffing their pockets, there were still twelve baskets full of food left over. (Matthew 14 & Luke 9)
• Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead to show He is the source of eternal life. (John 11)
• Jesus was executed on a cross to pay the price in Heaven’s court for our offenses against God’s holiness. (Luke 23)
• Jesus arose from the dead and commanded His followers to teach the world about Him. (Luke 24 & Matthew 28)

The Reward
Worshiping God and telling others about Jesus is the right response to finding out about Christ’s appearing. The apostle Paul called it righteousness. In Paul’s final letter to his dear friend Timothy, Paul wrote,
“Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” (II Timothy 4:8)

Paul encouraged Timothy and all those who would listen to receive the crown of righteousness by loving Christ’s appearing. Paul encouraged us in other places to look forward to Christ’s return, but here he is telling us of a reward for those who loved Jesus’ first appearing.

So as we turn our calendars to 2012, remember that 2012 years ago Christ appeared and was living among us. And as we look forward to seeing Christ after our death, He will give a Crown of Righteousness to those who loved the right thing … His Appearing.

The Meaning of Christmas

Christmas is the time of year
To share gifts with joy and cheer.
To celebrate our Savior’s birth,
God the Creator, came to earth.

He was born on straw and hay;
Not in a hospital like today.
There was no room in the hotel
For the man who conquered hell.

He never owned a house or car,
Yet wise men came from afar.
Gold and perfume they did bring
To honor the boy who would be King.

Jesus grew up as a carpenter;
Not at a resort with jewels and fur.
He was humble and very wise
And always helped the hurting cries.

He healed the sick and the lame,
And gave a blessing on all who came.
He rebuked sin and exposed lies.
The prostitute he forgave and didn’t despise.

It seemed that all was lost,
When He was nailed to the cross.
He had to pay for our sin;
God showed His love … our hearts to win.

Yes, forgiveness you can receive,
If you repent and believe
That Jesus died for your sin;
He was put in the grave, but He rose again.
